Spanish decoration events and fairs

Decoration fairs

Decoration is our passion. That’s why once more this will be a post full of references to this world of interior design at home. On this occasion this post is addressed to those who still do not have very clear what style to apply at home. Also to those who are considering to change their furniture and ornaments. How to find inspiration? At the best home decor events and decoration fairs of our country!

On the other hand, we also want to indicate the best chances for professionals in the sector to meet other colleagues and build useful relationships.

Decoration fairs are a perfect place to get a first-hand look at trends. You will know the newest on furniture market  and decoration in general. That’s why we recommend you keep an eye on the following dates:

Casa Decor (Madrid)

We cannot start this article without mention this exhibition in Madrid. It is the great event par excellence in Spanish interior design and many editions endorse its importance. More than 25 years celebrating an event where decorative art have a main role. It has designs that go from  traditional works to the most avant-garde ones.

To the prestige of the event we must add the personality of the venues that host its editions. Examples of them are the Núñez de Balboa building or the Francisco de Rojas building. The last two exhibitions have taken place in these two places.

Visitors can live an incredible experience surrounded by the most special proposals of many professionals in the sector. For them, the interior designers and architecture and decoration studios, is a perfect place to show their work. Also, it is an opportunity to meet other colleagues and companies. More than 40,000 people attend the event and although it’s too late to attend this year’s edition, it took place last February, keep an eye out to know when the next one will take place, it’s worth it!

Intergift (Madrid).

If instead of decorating your home you are thinking of how to make the best decorative gifts for a friend or family, we recommend you to go to Intergif, the Lifestyle and gift fair in Spain and Portugal. It takes place twice a year, so if you missed the winter edition, do not hesitate to visit them in September. At the exhibition you will find differents interior design and furniture projects. In addition, you will find national and international brands. They reserve the “Handmade” for craft-focused makers.

Decoration fairs

Habitat (Valencia).

This is the light and furniture fair in Valencia that over 50 editions later, is considered an international showcase of the Spanish sector. In this case, the fair is exclusively reserved to the professionals. It is a decoration event that acts as an access point to markets of great importance, from Eastern Europe to Asia. The next edition will take place on September 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th, 2019.

Expohogar (Barcelona).

The venue: Fira Barcelona – Montjuic held this biannual Catalan event. In addition to the exhibition they organize activities, workshops and informative lectures which are carried out by experts specialized in interior design, window dressing, retail, marketing, social networks, crafts, design or demonstrations of floral art and gift packaging. This is for all types of audiences. There you can find everything, from ideas for decorating your home based on new trends to  offers of different types of products.

 SurMueble (Sevilla).

Unlike the previous decoration fairs, SurMueble does not stand out for being very long-lived. This only taked place twice. However, in its short history it has already reached more than 10,000 people visiting this event where the Andalusian furniture industry meets. Its headquarters, the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses of Seville (FIBES) brings together many professionals from the furniture sector during its celebration.

These are some of the decoration events of our country. However, if we expand our horizons a little, we will soon discover that the meetings and decoration fairs are still on the agenda. From the Furniture Fair in Milan to Expoambientes in Mexico City, through the 48HDeco International Fair, in the French city of Lille (one of the most important in Europe). As you can see, the list of options is wide. If you are interested in decoration, you have no excuse! Plan the trip and visit one of them.

Be Eco-friendly and sustainable, the future of luxury brands

environment

Today we celebrate World Environment Day, so we want to dedicate today’s post to talk about environment .

Nowadays, there is a growing concern for brands to be environmentally responsible, trying to be as sustainable as posible. Mostly millennials are responsible for consuming these types of brands, therefore big luxury brands do not want to lose sight of this generation.

They are committed to their values and aware of this reality, that’s why they boost this type of purchases encouraging big brands that care about the eco-friendly, being for some of them prescribers.

This is also happening with luxury hotels, which are offering their services trying to cause the least impact on nature, being able to provide their guests with experiences of the paradises where we can find them. As for example Soneva paradise. The eco and the simple are nowadays a definition of current luxury, favoring those, luxury brands so  they have a greater affinity with their public.

A study by The Shelton Group shows that millennials, as mentioned before, are the main consumers of these brands, so these luxury brands are increasingly making positive strategies for the environment .

environment

Which are these brands?

Vivienne Westwood

A British fashion designer closely associated with punk and New Wave movements. It is one of the pioneering brands in sustainable fashion, although it does not stand out in its image. She named her AW17/18 show “Ecotricity”, and was related to renewable energy,  as an attempt to attract other luxury brands to move to the green energy movement. Her campaign was backed by the mayor of London and the British Fashion Council, and several British companies such as Belstaff or Marks & Spencer, which have already committed to follow Westwood’s example.

We can see the exhibition on active sustainable fashion currently in the V & A Museum, in London.

Gucci

This was one of the first brands to get involved in sustainability, creating a collection of 100% sustainable bags.

In 2010, they launched the use of recyclable containers with FSC certificate. The next year, in 2011 they introduced a collection of eyewear. They made it with greener materials that are based on castor-oil seeds. In 2012 they presented a collection of sandals of sustainable and biodegradable plastic.

Later, in 2014 they focused on corporate social responsibility and its objective was to achieve leather and fur proceeding from 100% of “verified captive breeding operations or  from wild populations in a sustainable way”

Besides, in 2017 they announced that they refused to continue using fur in their collections, stop using fox skins, mink, rabbit, Karakul, raccoon in their collections.  This action produced a very positive attitude for vegans, vegetarians and animal activists.

In 2018, the company launched Gucci Equilibrium to aspire to greater sustainability. The website Equilibrium.gucci.com is “designed to connect people, the planet and the purpose” by allowing Gucci staff to devote 1% of their working time to volunteering in local communities.

Stella McCartney

Since 2001, the designer does not stop at the exclusion of materials from animals. She shot her last publicity campaign in a landfill. It is one of the brands that commits to change their energy suppliers for green energy by the year 2020.

This is why more and more companies are appearing in the ethical or sustainable movement. Brands that manufacture in Spain or in Europe, tend to be the ones that take more care of the environment.

How decorate your mansion

Luxury decoration

Luxury has different aspects when we talk about decoration. We want to show different versions of luxury decoration that always keep their style intact. We teach you different ways of understanding and approaching it. It just depends on you to find the one that best suits you and the house of your dreams.

We can start talking about quiet luxury.

It is nearly always a kind of ‘l’art de vivre’, good taste and the ability to get excited. It’s the most peaceful decoration. What we really want is to strengthen the structures of the house. For example, taking advantage of columns, pavements, wooden beams… Decorating with a few well-placed pieces and special decor.  Its value lies in making a beautiful space with no soul, being able to capture the sophistication and good taste. You have to know how to use luxury decoration so you get a quiet and balanced space.

Luxury decoration

Let’s see the totally opposite side, the excess.

Here the opulence, the ornate, is carried away. It seems that there are too many elements but it is just an impression. In these spaces nothing is missing, but nothing is unnecessary. In this luxury decoration you cannot miss golden glitters, marble and the wonderful fabrics that dress windows and upholstered sofas.  We cannot help mentioning the classic pure excess of velvets, they are used to make all kinds of patterns to decorate cushions, blankets, curtains, etc. This new luxury, more transgressive and bold, shows the most extravagant side of the house and is only suitable for brave people. You must be really careful not to cross the line of good taste into the most horrendous result. Betting on this version implies a lot of self-confidence

We can talk about another type of luxury decoration somewhere between moderation and excess. A more neutral decoration.

Many times luxury is the details, the proportions, the distribution that makes the spaces look serene, balanced, with harmony. Creating spaces that can captivate and excite us.

Another type of decoration worth commenting on is the collector’s spirit.

Art in motion. We do not only refer to painting, photography and sculpture – almost always synonyms of luxury – but we open this artistic universe to include pieces of furniture. Armchairs, lamps, tables … are usually the protagonists of the spaces, providing the necessary touch of sophistication.

Luxury decoration

Another form of decoration to brighten up your home is the “dazzling style”.

With this expression we refer to metals, crystals, mirrors … elements that reflect light.

This type of materials are ideal for a decoration less opaque or polished.

As we have mentioned when it comes to creating a sophisticated and stylish atmosphere, you should take into account the light but also the color.

Light and color.

Lights can also be used to light up paintings or give a touch of theatricality. Color, on the other hand, is a very important ally, but if chosen wrong can ruin the space. There are different ways to play with colors. You can create different environments with dark tones. But nevertheless, people have the wrong idea about darks colors making rooms look smaller. The easiest solution is White. Anyway creating luxury implies a risk.

As important as the color and lighting is the staging.

The arrangement of different elements and decorative object, including artworks, is very important. It is always a good idea to show your interests but without overdoing it. For example, placing some pictures, but not everywhere. You can also exhibit your books with beautiful spines, or cover them with decorative papers. We always tend to clutter up our lives and we need to know what to exhibit.

Rugs:

Another tip is to put a rug in each area. In this way the furniture of that area will be pulled together, helping to define spaces.  Walls are usually the ones to define the room, but carpets can change the focus on each area.

We cannot conclude without mentioning golden and precious metal decorative elements. They are highly recommended for a sumptuous decoration, since they are the best representation of luxury. Anyway, the world would be a very dull place without a bit of extravagance

Christmas decoration ideas to impress your guests

Christmas decoration

Christmas is fast-approaching and numerous preparations need to be made before its arrival. Planning your holidays and your menu for special days like Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, buying presents and, obviously, decorating your home for these events are some of them. Christmas is coming, so today we couldn’t resist bringing you some Christmas decoration suggestions to impress your guests. We hope they will inspire you!

There’s no accounting for taste. For this reason, we can find many types of Christmas decoration, since each person likes giving a special and personal touch to their homes.  As any other type of decoration, it is important to pay attention to detail. We recommend you some decorative styles so you can start planning yours.

Fairy tale style.

Christmas is meant for children. It’s the best time of the year for many of them, who have been waiting for these days for months. That’s why the excitement of the little ones is always present in the family environment. To add a dose of childhood to the atmosphere, consider using this type of decoration based on traditional stories. Here the main characters will be figures like tin soldiers, nutcrackers, or Santa Claus and forest ornaments, such as pine cones and other forest fruits- If you decorate a Christmas tree following this style, you will have that lovely place that you were looking for.

Christmas decoration

 Scandinavian style.

This style has been a trend for years and it has come to stay. Christmas Scandinavian decoration is in vogue. White and neutral tones are mixed with simple adornments (such as elves and Christmas ornaments) of light colours which are made of natural materials or fabric. It is an almost minimalist style, where original Christmas trees can stand out. They are far from the classic fir tree of green branches. They look like old trunks with hanging ornaments.

 Rustic style.

We love feeling a climate of comfort at Christmas. This is why we think you should choose your Christmas decoration based on rustic style. What is more welcoming than wood? Brown and beige tones will be a plus if you combine them with wooden articles inspired by nature, such as garlands, pine cones, Christmas ornaments and animal motifs for the tree. If you want to feel yourself as if you were spending these days in the middle of the mountains, you will need a special touch: a tree with snowy branches will be perfect.

Christmas decoration

Luminous style.

This is the most luminous time of the year. We find lights in the street, in the stores, in the facades… and your home can’t be less bright. The possibilities that offer this style are endless, and you can even combine it with the above styles. Lights will provide an elegant touch to your rooms. You can put them on the tree, inside vases, on your mirrors, over your bed etc. If you make your home bright with glamour and sophistication, nobody will remain indifferent.

Christmas decoration

Tropical style.

If you are a daring person and you think that traditional Christmas is boring; or you need to feel the tropical heat even in winter, it’s possible to create fun Christmas decoration in yellow and pink tones. This style replaces firs with palm trees, wood with wicker and pine cones with pineapples.

Whatever style you choose, remember that you can not only change your living room with these suggestions of Christmas decoration, but also do the same with any other part of your house. From kitchens to bathrooms, there is room for Christmas anywhere.

Christmas decoration for bathroom.

Maybe you have never thought about it, but why not add red socks or Christmas bells to your bathroom? Put lights on the mirror or little minimalist table trees on furniture or on the sink. There even Christmas accessories designed to put the soap! Besides, you can add theme stickers to the shower screen or use curtains with Christmas ornaments.

Christmas decoration for kitchen.

This is an important  part of the house, especially during Christmas. It’s the place where we will cook delicious dishes that will be served in family dinners and meals. For this reason, we think it’s essential that the spirit of Christmas spreads all over the walls and furniture. However, as it should be a practical space, it is not advisable to over decorate it. It would be a better option to use simple items like kitchen towels with Christmas drawings, garlands placed in such a way as not to disturb the pace, and hanging ornaments from door handles.

Be sure to follow all these ideas with luxury and exclusive products. For example, you can use Spanish porcelain figures or French crystal. We also recommend you the sophisticated ornament collections of the German firm Krebs Glas Lausche. This family company currently led by the fourth generation, manufactured in 2008 a beautiful red gold ball of 12 carats and 120 diamonds and continues specialized in this type of objects.

Cecilia Gómez, interior decoration

Interior decoration

When we talk about interior decoration, it is usual to think that we are referring exclusively to the house’s aesthetic. However, this goes far beyond. Beauty can be, for example, a synonym of order. It is also a way to plan the distribution of spaces, an aid to take a better advantage of them and to make the most of them. The interior atmosphere of our home is fundamental for human’s well-being .

Therefore, we can’t be satisfied just by the cover of decoration’s concept. If all elements that have been chosen are those that best suit you, are placed in a perfect location and are a part of a whole, it will be more likely that your house becomes more and more as your initial idea and begins to become the home of your dreams. And this is the philosophy of today’s post lead: the firm Cecilia Gómez.

Our participation in Salón Inmobiliario internacional de Madrid (SIMA) a few months ago, left us great experiences. The biggest Real Estate event celebrated in our country, brought together developers, builders, interior decoration shops, real estate agencies, credit institutions and all kinds of companies that have a direct contact with the industry.

During our stay there, we had the chance to know many brands from all sectors mentioned before. Due to the proximity to our stand, and so because of the great treatment that they gave to the exhibitors and visitors, and mainly for the quality of their materials and service, one of the best experiences that we took from SIMA was to meet Cecilia Gómez and her team.

So, on today’s post about interior decoration, we would like to dedicate a space to talk about them.

Cecilia Gómez is a family business headed by a mother and her daughter. Curiously, with the name of her daughter, which is Cecilia Gómez, the mother started in the world of interior decoration. Tips to sell or buy artworks

artworks

Have you ever thought about buying artworks or selling pieces that you already have in your collection? Before you start this adventure, it’s important that you know how to do it. For this reason, today we offer you several tips that will help you to not make any mistakes. If you keep in mind what we will tell you below, it will be easier that those works which you feel connection at first sight will be yours; if on the contrary you are thinking about to get rid of some creation, now you will know what are the steps you should follow:

1.- Know the places where you can buy and sell the artworks

Nowadays there are three different types of market for art trading. On one hand we have the galleries, the fairs and on the other hand we have the auctions. Besides you can buy or sell art online.

We have to recall that fairs are the most importat places to buy and sell art. However, we shouldn’t forget about the galleries, where the career of an artist is really promoted.

We have to have in mind that to attend an auction you must be registered as a participant. There are some of them which are open to the public and anyone can go and bid, but they are unusual.

  • Galleries and fairs:

Purchase: First of all, you have to find what you like and then you have to talk with the gallery team. When you decide, they give you the documentation to fill. These requirements consists of a certificate of authenticity —even if the work is signed, it is important—, catalogs or texts about the artist and the invoice, which works as a proof of ownership.

When we formalize the documentation, we pay for the work and the gallery organizes the framing, when necessary, and the delivery of the work at the buyer’s address.

Sale: for sale it’s different. We must know that each gallery is sorted by specialty. For example, some of them only sell abstract and modern art, and there are others which specialize in figurative art and great masters artworks. Thus, we have to consider what kind of work is what we want to sell and choose the most convenient gallery for us. Art galleries reach an agreement with the seller to receive an amount of money when he sells his work.

Famous fairs to mention:

  • Auction:

Purchase: In order to buy at an auction one or several artworks you need the catalog to know that convenes you. There are three ways to participate at: in the room, physically; by phone, making an appointment with the auction house that organizes the bid previously; or in writing. You must set a maximum bid, a fixed price that you can’t exceed. Understandably, to buy the artworks you must make the highest offer.

Sale: In the auctions the works aren’t only sold by the market price: you can receive much more money, not only for pictures of some famous artist but also for any auctioned work there.

The Auction Houses makes the appraisal of the work and if you agree with the price, they proceed to auction it. If you finally sell the art piece , the auction house charges a percentage of the final sale price.

Famous Auction Houses: Sotheby’s/ Christie’s / Bonhams / Phillips de Pury & Company / Dorotheum

  • Buy on the Internet.

Purchase: On the internet, we can participate in every singles market above described to buy artworks. In addition to allow participation in auctions, some websites offer the possibility of buying in galleries too.

For example, Artnet, Paddle8 or Artsy are the best known websites. The biggest problem of online shopping is that you can’t see physically the work. Thus, you can not appreciate what is its state.

Sale: In the case of artworks sales on the internet, there are many sites where art can be sold. The most important thing is to take a good pic to check the entire piece from all perspectives. Besides you should explain carefully the characteristics of the work. Thanks to that, potential customers can trust on the type of work that you offer to him. In general, Internet sites earn a percentage of the value of the sold work.

2.- Know the price of the work

To know the price of a work, it is essential to know:

Who is the author?

At best, the work has a  signed, the artist is known and your research is restricted only to verify that the work is authentic. The problem comes in when the work is not signed or, despite of being an original work, the signature of another artist has been added. In this case, you must investigate to figure out who the true author is or, if you can’t find it, at least being able to place the work in a particular time and specific school.

What year does the work dates from?

Even if we don’t know who the author is, the painting can have a value for belonging to an artistic movement and be representative of it; or to a specific historical period or have value as an antiquity. We must also have this point in mind.

Finally you must prove that the work is good and check which is its legitimate origin and investigate how much similar works are being sold for .

You can also ask for advice from experts or, if we are lost we can learn much more by going to exhibitions, reading about art, etc.
